Best Homemade Treatment for Breakage and Natural Hair

I finally have come to understand why they call it a natural hair journey; just like any other journey, there are always twists and turns along the way. We never know what awaits us ahead or whether we should turn back and cut off our journey; the signs and turns that distract us along the way, the dead ends and roadblocks that make us feel like giving up or starting all over again on a new journey.

I decided to give myself a challenge by going back to basics; no fancy products, no stressing over twists at night, just enjoy a good cold shower from head to toe every morning and let my hair be in this crazy heat in Mombasa. I must admit the first few days were very challenging for me, as much as embracing shrinkage is something I have come to accept, rocking a Kunta Kinte Roots sort of weird fro, wasn’t easy. But I was determined to do the no products challenge for two weeks, and just let my hair be.

I saw a homemade treatment a few weeks back on Instagram, thanks to the ever creative Tindi Kamwentu, and I decided to give it a try. I must say this sweet potato treatment was fun to make, and the results were more than amazing that I decided to share the recipe for all my natural hair sisters struggling with breakage:

Ingredients

2 Raw sweet potatoes,
250ml plain (I opted for vanilla) yoghurt,
A spoonful of honey,
Essential oil of your choice (I used vitamin E and Jojoba Oil)

Procedure:

Boil the sweet potatoes in water for about fifteen minutes (refrain yourself from eating all of them) drain the water but don’t throw it away. Blend the sweet potatoes using the drained water; add yoghurt gradually until you get a thick, smooth pudding like cream. Add essential oils and blend them in one last time; apply the treatment on your hair and let it stay for 45minutes to one hour, then rinse off with a conditioner of your choice!

Notice the slip and moisture from the sweet potato treatment I got without using any product on my hair? I have never used any product that has left my hair feeling so moisturized and soft. This treatment is very ideal for humid areas, it gives your hair a natural shine, and more importantly, you will not have to go through the pain of cleaning your bathroom after all the shedding and breakage that comes with wash days!

After rinsing it off and applying my fave Aussie conditioner, I did flat twists using no product whatsoever and the curls just seemed to pop!

If you suffer from hair breakage, I would recommend this treatment, because the Omega 3, fatty acids and Vitamin A, C, K and E contained in them will definitely quench your thirsty hair! Natural hair treatments are always cumbersome to make sometimes, but the results surpass the time spent making them. Why not take advantage of the long Easter holiday and pamper your hair with this lovely treatment? The beauty of natural hair is that you never know what remedies you might just cook up that will do wonders to your hair!
