A man without a beard is like a lion without a mane. But I’ve seen some rough, brittle beards lately, the sight of a maneless lion wouldn’t be so traumatizing! Beards are to men what contouring is to women, I still remember it like it was yesterday in the year of our Lord 2016, when I saw that horrific photo of Idris Elba without a beard, I spent many a nights rocking back and forth in denial refusing to accept that my Idris looked like that without a beard; it took a while before life made sense, until he decided to redeem himself again.
For all those who are not familiar with the term Movember, also known as No Shave November, Movember is for perfectly ordinary men to brave the task of growing a moustache to raise money for charities fighting prostate cancer, testicular and mental health issues such as depression. It has become popular through the years with men rocking beards more than moustaches. Sadly some men have been walking around with unkempt beards which really beat the purpose, and not a pretty sight to look at. Hence why I felt compelled to write this article, seeing as our fellow beard gang members are part of the natural hair community as well!
Shampoo and Condition Your Beard– Just like your hair, your beard needs some good cleansing as well, and not the regular soap you use while taking a shower. A gentle sulfate-free shampoo for your beard twice a week helps in giving it a nice, shiny look. After a gentle wash with warm water, massage it with a moisturizing conditioner in circular motions and leave it on for a few minutes then rinse it off. Make sure you rinse it off well to avoid leaving any leftover conditioners.
Give It a Good Trim– Trim your beard at least every six weeks or so, this helps in giving you an even beard growth. The new hair growth aids in making your hair finer and softer, instead of walking around with a prickly beard.
Invest in a Good Bristle Brush– Again, referring to natural hair, detangling your hair makes it easy to manage and deal with. Similarly a good bristle brush is vital when it comes to grooming your beard and helps in evenly spreading natural oils, which aids in softening your beard and giving it a nice sleek look.
Deep Condition Your Beard– Coconut oil is everything; it saves lives, our skin and sanity as well; we all need to pour some coconut oil in our lives every now and then. You can do this by heating up coconut oil in the microwave for a few minutes, then dip a comb in the oil and run it through your facial hair and leave it overnight for intense conditioning, afterwards rinse it off with cold water to enable the pores to close up.
Moisturize Your Beard– For natural hair to thrive, it needs moisture, moisture and lots of moisture; same thing with your beard. Not only does a moist beard look good, but it saves you from the pain of dealing with ingrown hairs. Shea Butter, Beeswax, Avocado Oil, Argan Oil and Joboba Oil make for a very good beard balm. Not only do they help in leaving your beard super moisturized, they also help in rehydrating your beard which helps in stimulating hair growth.
Invest in Natural Oils– Amla Oil naturally helps with facial growth; massaging it and leave it on for 15-20 minutes then rinse it off. Eucalyptus and Rosemary oil are also very essential when it comes to facial hair growth; just like Amla, leave it on for about thirty minutes then rinse it off with cold water.
With natural oils readily available, you don’t need to walk around with a Kunta Kinte prickly beard. This November, Awali Naturals has decided to give away 3 balms especially made for guys with beards in mind. You might probably be wondering what the fuss in using beard balms is. Well beard balms help in giving you a healthy, thick and manageable beard as well as nourishing it to prevent things like dry flaky skin, eczema and acne.
With special formulated butters and essential oils included in the balm, Awali Naturals has decided to give away a few tubs this Movember. I will be giving away a few of the butters via my Twitter, Facebook and Instagram pages, so make sure you keep it posted for your chance to get your hands on the beard balm!
