Once Upon A Time and Out of Africa

“I had a farm in Africa, at the foot of the Ngong Hills, the equator runs across these highlands, a hundred miles to the North and the farm lay at an altitude of over six thousand feet. In the day time, you felt that you had got high up, near to the sun, but the early mornings and evenings were limping and restful, and the nights were cold”- Out of Africa by Isak Dinesen.

That was my favorite line in her book Out of Africa, you could tell that’s where her heart belonged! I remember the first time I read the book, I got so captivated and enchanted by her and the love she had for Africa, the wildlife and the people; in a way most of my sojourns are influenced by the way she was able to see the beauty in Africa everywhere she went. The beauty about reading a book first before watching the movie, is in the way you are able to bring all the characters to life and visualize them in your own way; create places and surroundings that only you can capture.

Now just picture yourself on a lazy Sunday afternoon; the sun is shining, the weather is blue, everything is fine; you and your loved ones are relaxed, your kids are at a distance glare being taken care of by responsible minders. It’s probably never crossed your mind to take a tour of Karen Blixen’s Museum; the house she loved and resided in while in Africa, all the intricate details, neat and safely replaced just the way they were. After the tour, you sit down on a mkeka with your bottle of wine, enjoying some music and entertainment. The sun slowly starts setting on the foot of Ngong hills, you’re gazing at probably the exact same place Karen Blixen did eons ago, nibbling on your popcorns, as you await for the movie Out of Africa to start, with the ambience and familiarity of the place surrounding you!

That is the amazing concept Once Upon A Time has for you this 23rd (Sunday) at Karen Blixen from 1pm- 7pm. With classic vintage cars, vintage fashion and educational fun activities for your kids, it’s the perfect way to enjoy your Sunday afternoon for only 2000 Kshs for two people, while kids below 12 get in for free! If you fancy getting advanced tickets, you can get them on or Lipa na MPESA till no: 564618 as well!

We all lead busy lives and never take time to enjoy the simple pleasures that life has to offer, that’s why Once Upon A Time has decided to bring back the old memories, when we all would gather to watch outdoor movies back in the day!

Karen Blixen once said: “To be a person is to have a story to tell”. So join us this Sunday as we relive beautiful memories and create more memories, for the younger ones so that they may also have stories to tell in future!
